A business meet, held at SRM University on Tuesday, demonstrated the positives of the UNDP – GEF project on Concentrated Solar Technology (CST)

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is now targeting hospitals and hospitality sectors in Tamil Nadu to promote solar energy as an alternative. To demonstrate this, the Government of India partnered with the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) and Global Environment Fund (GEF) to conduct programmes based on solar power for market development. A business meet, held at SRM University on Tuesday, demonstrated the positives of the UNDP – GEF project on Concentrated Solar Technology (CST) by inviting faculties from various institutions, hospitals and hotels in Tamil Nadu. The project has been planned for a duration of five years (April 2012 – March 2017) under which they are targeting nearly eight States in the country, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in South India. According to Sudhir Kumar, Joint Director of World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE), Tamil Nadu has shown great interest in this initiative. “This being the third campaign in Tamil Nadu, the State has already come up with nearly 45 project ideas. Out of this, we are looking to approve at least 20,” he said. The event also saw the participation of various representatives from hostels and hospitals in Tamil Nadu. The attractive, yet expensive alternative has not deterred the hospitality sectors as it gives them an opportunity to contribute to the nature. “The main idea is to give back something to the nature, so moving towards a renewable energy will be healthy decision,” said Dinesh from Taj Fishermen Cove. A recent policy announcement of the Tamil Nadu Government asking various sectors to spend three per cent of their revenue on solar energy has led many hotels to try this alternative. The project has several advantages other than being environmental friendly. The Union Government is giving users a 30 per cent subsidy for commercial use and 60 per cent subsidy for non-commercial use. Using solar power in commercial areas will also give users an 80 per cent of Income Tax rebate. Pankaj Kumar, DPM in UNDP insisted to make optimum use of this subsidized opportunity by the sectors before the subsidies are pulled back.

SRM University has reached the finals of a global competition organised by aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco)

3 students from SRM University offer peek into ‘silent’ aircraft Three aerospace engineering students from Chennai have landed in London, with a project to create the aircraft of the future with zero propulsion noise. The team from SRM University has reached the finals of a global competition organised by aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). The team, comprising Balakrishnan Solaraju Murali, Michael Thomas and Anita Mohil, is among the five groups that have made it to the finals of the 'Fly Your Ideas' competition that saw 6,000 students in 618 teams from 82 countries vie for the 30,000-euro top prize. The other teams in the final are from Australia, Brazil, Italy and Malaysia. Ideas floated in the competition included planes powered by body heat, luggage floating on a bed of air or even an aircraft running on liquid methane. The SRM team's top line idea is called 'Engine Air Cooling System for Noise Reduction.' The trio has found a way to reduce propulsion noise by modifying the shape of the jet exhaust using intelligent materials (shape memory alloys). The final hurdle will see students present their ideas to a jury of Airbus and industry experts at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse on June 12. The winning team will receive the 30,000-euro prize with the runners up bagging 15,000 euros. The winners will be announced at an exclusive ceremony at Unesco's headquarters in Paris on June 14. Aerospace engineers from across the world had to create the aircraft of the future, covering one of six themes identified by Airbus as the key 21st century challenges for a greener aviation industry. These included addressing energy need, efficiency, affordable and traffic growth, passenger experience and community friendliness. Charles Champion, Airbus' executive vice president, engineering and Fly Your Ideas patron said, "The entries were assessed by experienced Airbus engineers who were extremely impressed by the quality of work and innovation. These talented students from around the world represent the future of our industry and I am looking forward to welcoming them to Toulouse for the final round." Throughout the competition, Airbus mentors have worked with the teams to provide guidance and support with their projects in addition to a member of staff from their university. Airbus and Unesco say competitions like this are becoming increasingly important after a study from the McKinsey Global Institute revealed innovation could be under threat from an engineering skills gaps that could be hitting the economy hard. McKinsey forecasted that high-tech companies will face a shortfall of 40 million skilled workers by 2020, with aerospace likely to suffer, along with motor and the medical equipment sectors.

Camber Racing @ SRM University

Formula One entered the Indian scene in the year 2011, and the success of the F1 Grand Prix has certainly proven to be a stepping stone to a great future. This grand success has surely led to the evolution of the Formula Racing in India. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is the world governing council of automotive field which organizes various engineering competitions across the globe for students to design a prototype that is to be evaluated for its potential as a racing car. In September of 2009, a group of engineering students from SRM University collectively formed an engineering team called 'Camber Racing' on campus to compete in FSAE (Formula Student) events worldwide. Though, they recognize themselves as a racing outfit, they compete with other teams on an engineering level instead of determining who has achieved faster lap times. Faster lap times are a factor at Formula One level of motorsports, a level they intend to reach someday. To their utter delight, Camber Racing won the most coveted 'Best Marketing Presentation Award' in the very first edition of SUPRA SAE. For the next edition, the team underwent rigorous training, and their car, 'The Beast' won the overall 1st prize out of 65 teams and along with other awards such as 2nd in Endurance event, 2nd in Autocross event and 2nd in Skid-pad event. Camber Racing has been to the world's 3rd toughest and highest altitude rally, the Raid De Himalayas in October 2010 and completed it. In a very short time, Camber Racing has gone on to become the most popular SUPRA SAE team in the country. Camber Racing, in its attempts to promote its sponsors, conducted a Public Relations Event in collaboration with Aaruush (the techno management fest of SRM University) 2011-2012 by displaying the LJM 01 and conducting a Demo Run of the car. Aaruush'11 and '12 witnessed Camber Racing as the ultimate showstopper, and established itself a great fan following! As part of its future endeavours, Camber Racing has associated itself as the education partners with South India's biggest Auto Expo held in Chennai. Camber Racing is expected to enter the FSAE international forum next year with the SAE 2014 being held in Germany and intends to be the first ever Indian team to clear all ten rounds in its debut season

Eight group B Universities have made it to the A list-Review committee

NEW DELHI: Even as the Supreme Court is hearing the deemed university case, eight of the 44 found deficient on certain counts have made it to the 'deemed university' list after rectifying the faults pointed out by the Tandon committee in 2009.
In its comprehensive review of 126 deemed universities, the Tandon committee had found only 38 (group A) fit to qualify as deemed universities while 44 (group B) were found deficient in some parameters that needed to be rectified. Another 44, put in group C, were found totally unfit to be deemed universities. The affected universities went to the Supreme Court and the matter is being heard.
Meanwhile, eight group B universities have made it to the A list. This includes SRM University, Chennai; NITTE, Mangalore; Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore; KLE, Belgaum; Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune; HBNI (Homi Bhabha), Mumbai; Sathyabama University, Chennai; and Avinashilingam Institute of Higher Education for Women & Home Sciences, Coimbatore.
The review committee made an assessment of progress made by these universities and found that substantial improvements were made, be it conforming to UGC guidelines, governance, quality and innovations in teaching, research output, faculty resources, doctoral and other research degree programmes and admission process and award of degrees.
It is not that these universities came up with flying colours on all parameters but marked improvement was noted in key parameters. The minimum score needed for category A status is 30 and all eight of them scored 31. In case of SRM University, research output had increased as well as the number of students registered for PhD.

Size Matters!

Pallavi Gupta
Long gone are the days when compact and sleek cell phones that could fit in the palm of your hand, were way cooler
than the monstrosities we see these days. Growing screen sizes has been a trend for a few years now, essentially driven by the popularity of large-screen Android powered devices such as phones from Samsung, HTC and Motorola. The latest editions to the melee of smartphones in the market are the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2, HTC Butterfly and LG Optimus Vu. On paper, these devices have top-of-the-line features. With 1.6 GHz quadcore processors, minimum internal storage of 64GB, the latest Android OS (Jelly Bean) and an 8 megapixels or better camera, they are unarguably the best technological feat available in the phone market today. But see it in the flesh and you will notice one thing above all else, its positively gigantic display. The screen size is comically huge. Closer to a tablet than a phone, they are now being termed as a phablet. Hold it up against your ears to make a call and just the weirdness of it throws everyone around you into a hysterical attack.

That just makes me wonder why someone who is ready to spend an inordinately steep price for these gadgets can’t seem to be able to invest in a Bluetooth headset. Attend a call on a hot day, and your priceless big screen sweats along with you. These brands of phones in the market are just too big. The sheer size of it makes it difficult to carry around in your pocket comfortably, in turn affecting the fit of your denim. The large screen also makes a chore out of using the on-screen keyboard.
It’s just too wide to type or scroll comfortably with one hand. The point of a handset is to put it bluntly, fit in your hand.
Well, my experience of coming very close to dropping my phone on the harsh city sidewalks multiple times, when gripping it single handedly is sure to make me stay away from the seductive gargantuan beauties on my next trip to the electronics store. What about you? With many people questioning the practicality of these ubercool, but massive displays, the demand for smaller screens might increase in the future.

Avinash.R ,14 and pursuing B.Tech!

Avinash R., a first year student of Information Technology Engineering, B.Tech(IT), of SRM University, Kattankulathur has already a stack of feathers stuck up in his cap. Starting at the age of 12, he has cleared many certified networking courses in CISCO and Microsoft. Also, early, in his 8th grade he conducted online training on CISCO, Microsoft, Juniper, Apple and Redhat courses. One can attend his paid courses at his website, www.avitechnohome.com.  At 14, chancing upon the fact that one can join college then, he prepared the syllabi for 10, 11 and 12 standards and appeared for SRMEEE. When asked how he felt if and when people called him a
nerd, he answers nonchalantly that he isn’t one. “He doesn’t learn his subjects, rather learning is akin to playing”
says his friend Joshua, also from B.Tech, IT.

He also asserts that Avinash isn’t seen about with abook as is the notion in general. Cricket is his favourite sport and he loves playing the same. Fittingly, he uses a bicycle to move about in campus. When questioned on how it all started, he says it all just happened in the course of time. Nothing, he says, was thought afore. He acknowledges his parents for their support and encouragement. As for his future plans, not having given much thought, he considers becoming a scientist for India. Here’s singular talent.
